April is STD Awareness Month! This month the theme is Treat Me Right, which focuses on the important relationship between healthcare providers and their patients.
It is time to take control of your health, there is no avoiding the statistics. According to the CDC, the number of reported sexually transmitted disease (STD) cases are at an all-time high, and if you are sexually active, you are at risk of infection.
For providers, ‘Treat Me Right’ is an opportunity to ensure that we have the tools needed to treat our patients right – from detecting an infection and selecting the correct treatment regimen to engaging with our patients in a way that makes them feel heard and respected.
For patients, this year’s theme encourages you to learn about STDs and prevention, and provides you with resources to help you talk with your providers.
When it comes to protecting your sexual health, the best offense is a good defense. A relationship between patient and healthcare provider emphasizing teamwork and communication is key: when the relationship works better, sexual health works better. Take control and be informed.
