A Note from the CEO
What a whirlwind summer it has been! On the PHC “clock” we have been busy prepping for back to school clinics, planning for flu season and filling up the community outreach calendar with fall festivals so we are definitely feeling like autumn is right around the corner! But, with the extreme heat we have experienced in Central Iowa lately, we have not forgotten the power of summer. We have used our social media presence and other communication tools to encourage and inform our patients on staying safe in the extreme heat.
I also want to take this opportunity to share the results of our recent HRSA site visit. Every three years we receive a visit from our federal partner, HRSA, to evaluate compliance with the 19 health center requirements for community health centers. We are happy to report that we were in compliance with all 19 requirements, which is a rare event for any health center to receive. The reviewers identified several “best practices” including The Project, Homeless Support Services, and the Integrated Behavioral Health program. We are proud of our staff, providers and leadership team who work hard every day to make results like that happen – all for the benefit of the patients, clients and the communities we serve!
Part of our summer whirlwind included expanding our services to a new PHC site. The newly opened West Side Clinic, located in Clive, opened June 1. We are pleased to welcome Dr. Ross Valone to PHC. Dr. Valone is an OB/Gyn and will be seeing patients in Clive as well as at our East Side Clinic in Des Moines.
As you may remember, we have been providing Title X services (family planning and other reproductive health) at the East Side Clinic in Des Moines since this time last year and have begun to provide services at the Scavo Clinic as well. We recently rolled out Title X at the Marshalltown Clinic and will be servicing a six county area, including Marshall, Hardin, Poweshiek, Tama, Grundy and Jasper counties.
We appreciate those that turned out to advocate for community health centers in the midst of the debate over the ACA and whether or not to repeal/replace that legislation. We had a healthy exchange of ideas and shared our priorities with our state and local representatives. To those of you who called, emailed or otherwise engaged our legislators on our behalf – thank you!
Last, our staff is busy planning for National Health Center Week, taking place August 13 – 19. We will be hosting a Legislative Breakfast on Tuesday, August 15 and look forward to engaging legislators from both sides of the aisle. We have many folks “in our corner” and appreciate the bipartisan support we receive. We will also be unveiling our new mobile health unit at this event and are excited to create a bit of fanfare around that two exam room, clinic on wheels!
Here is to a safe and healthy rest of your summer!

Number of HIV Tests Exceeded Expectations
Tuesday, June 27 was National HIV Testing Day, an annual observance to promote HIV Testing. The Project of PHC set up a big, red tent at 1200 University to raise awareness and encourage folks to come in for a free, one minute HIV test. The outreach team was able to enjoy a beautiful day outside and spread the word about the importance of HIV education, testing and treatment. NHTD was a great success!
We beat our goal for the day by tripling what we expected to see – 67 people came through and were tested!
